FRONT DOOR COMPLIANCE
Dispensary ID scanner pricing and the best age verification options for your shop
The short answer
A dispensary ID scanner reads the barcode or chip on a driver license, checks it is real and not expired, and sends the result to your POS. Pricing is mostly quote based. IDScan.net is the one major vendor with a published rate card, reported by software directories from $35 a month for one device to $155 a month per device with ID authentication. Patronscan and Intellicheck do not publish prices. Hardware, the POS connection and your state data retention rules decide the real cost, so get all three in writing.

Our published directory listing (not a scanner)
Most states require a valid ID before anyone enters a dispensary, and a scanner is the fastest way to prove the door team checked. It also stops the expensive mistakes: an expired license, a fake that passes a glance, or a sale to someone under 21 that puts your license at risk.
This page covers what scanner software and hardware cost, which of the numbers are published and which are reported by third parties, how scanning connects to Dutchie, Sweed and other registers, and why a state like Illinois changes what you are allowed to keep. We sell dispensary listings, not scanners, so we have no reason to push one vendor.
Why it works
What to buy once the door is covered
Proof your team checked every ID
A scan log gives you a record if a regulator ever asks how you control entry. A glance at a card gives you nothing to show.
Faster lines at the door
A scan takes a second or two. Door staff stop squinting at birth dates and the line moves, which matters on a Friday evening.
A price you can budget
Scanner software is a monthly fee per device. Our listing is a flat $99 a month, published in USD, billed monthly.
Customers who arrive ready
Scanning protects the door. A claimed listing puts your menu, hours and daily deals in front of the adults searching for a licensed store, so there is a line worth checking.
Licensed shops only
We verify the state license before a listing goes live, so shoppers see a store that is allowed to sell.
How it works
Four steps, in the order that actually pays
Check what your state lets you keep
Rules on storing scanned data differ. One vendor says Illinois allows no information to be saved and offers an immediate purge, Montana limits how long data is kept and New Jersey allows only certain fields.
Confirm the POS connection
IDScan.net states that scanned data syncs to Dutchie and Sweed. Ask any vendor for a named list for your register and whether it is included or an add-on.
Price hardware and software together
One partner page lists a scanner at $899 and an authentication add-on at $100 a month. Ask for hardware, subscription and per-scan fees on one quote.
Test with real cards
Scan a medical card from your state and an out-of-state license before you commit. Medical card support varies by vendor.

IDScan.net figures come from a software directory listing of the vendor rate card, checked October 2026, and may have changed. Patronscan and Intellicheck do not publish pricing, so confirm current rates and what each plan includes in writing. Our $99 a month listing is our own and a different product.

How much does a dispensary ID scanner cost?
Software is usually a monthly fee per device, and the only major vendor with a published rate card is IDScan.net, reported by directories from $35 a month for one device to $155 a month per device with ID authentication. Patronscan asks you to talk to a representative and Intellicheck does not publish prices.
Add hardware. One partner listing shows a scanner at $899 and an authentication add-on at $100 a month, so a two-entrance shop should plan for two devices and a first-year total well above the headline subscription.
Do dispensaries have to scan IDs?
Most states require a valid ID or passport before anyone enters a dispensary, but a scan is not required everywhere. Some states require electronic scanning and some only a visual check, so confirm your regulator rules before buying. Even where it is optional, a log is cheap protection for your license.
Does an ID scanner work with Dutchie or Sweed?
IDScan.net states that scanned ID data syncs into Dutchie, Sweed and other cannabis software, or goes to your POS or track and trace software directly. That removes retyping a customer at the register and lets the sale attach to a verified profile.
If you run a different register, ask the scanner vendor for a customer in your state on the same POS. Our dispensary POS comparison shows what each system includes and what is a paid add-on.
What can a dispensary store from a scanned ID?
It depends on the state. One vendor says Illinois does not allow any information to be saved from a scanned ID, Montana puts time limits on retention and New Jersey allows only certain fields. A scanner that stores everything by default can put you out of compliance in those states.
Ask for the purge setting by name and have it switched on before opening day. If you are still pre-opening, our guide to the best POS for a new dispensary covers the other purchases that sit on the same deadline.
Does a scanner bring in customers?
No. A scanner protects the door and the license. It does not put your shop in front of someone searching for a licensed store nearby. That is what a verified directory listing does at a flat monthly fee. See how it works on listing your dispensary.
