The short answer
Cova vs Treez is a choice between a published price metered by workstation and an unpublished price that is not metered at all. Cova's US rate card lists Boutique at $349 a month with Cova Pay or $389 without, for up to two POS workstations, and Powerhouse at $499 or $599 for up to four. Treez sells one all-inclusive plan with unlimited registers and unlimited employees, quoted only after a demo. So the comparison has one fixed side and one negotiable side.
The rule that falls out of that is simple. At two registers, Cova's $349 to $389 is a hard ceiling that a Treez quote has to beat, and it rarely will, because Treez is built and priced for larger stores. At four registers the bar rises to $499 to $599. At five lanes or more, Cova moves you to a custom Enterprise quote and Treez's unlimited plan starts to earn its keep. On both, the payments rail decides more of the annual bill than the software does.
Is Cova cheaper than Treez?
Cova is cheaper than Treez for most single stores with up to four registers, on the only public evidence that exists. Cova publishes $349 to $599 a month per location, and the only figures in circulation for Treez, about $299 basic to about $1,000 fully featured, come from one unsourced blog post. Above four registers, a flat Treez quote can come in lower.
The asymmetry matters more than either number. You can check Cova's price against its own pricing page before the demo. You cannot check Treez's against anything, which means the Treez number is whatever the negotiation produces. That is not a reason to rule Treez out. It is a reason to walk into the Treez call already holding Cova's card for your register count, because it is the most reliable anchor in cannabis POS. We list every source for both on our Cova pricing page and in our Treez POS pricing breakdown.

Cova vs Treez pricing at 2, 4 and 8 registers
At two registers Cova costs $349 to $389 a month and Treez has to beat that with a quote. At four registers Cova costs $499 to $599. At eight, Cova needs an Enterprise quote too, so both sides are negotiated and Treez's unlimited plan is on home ground. The table shows where each model sits.
| Registers in one store | Cova, published | Treez | Who is likely cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Boutique, $349 with Cova Pay or $389 without | One quote, the same at any register count | Cova, unless Treez quotes under $349 |
| 3 to 4 | Powerhouse, $499 with Cova Pay or $599 without, plus a dedicated account manager | One quote | Close. Only the two written quotes settle it |
| 5 to 8 | Enterprise, custom quote | One quote | Treez's home ground. Both are now negotiated |
| Add ecommerce | Plus $199 a month, or $149 on promotion | Quoted inside the Treez deal | Ask Treez to show ecommerce as a line |
One Cova detail is worth confirming in writing. Its plan card limits Powerhouse to four workstations, and older comparison material elsewhere has described it as unlimited. If you run four lanes today and plan a fifth, ask Cova what a fifth workstation costs before you sign, because that is the moment the published card stops applying.
Is Cova Pay or TreezPay the bigger cost?
For a busy store the payments rail usually costs more over a year than either software plan, and neither Cova Pay nor TreezPay publishes its processing rate. Cova is the only vendor in the category that puts a public price on payments lock-in: its plans cost $40 to $100 a month less when you take Cova Pay. Treez folds TreezPay into the plan.
Put that next to the size of the processing bill. ACH and pay by bank are commonly reported at about 1% to 1.5% of the sale, and PIN debit at roughly 2.5% to 4% plus about 50 cents. On $2 million a year of sales, half a percentage point is $10,000 a year, which dwarfs a $100 monthly software discount. So the right question to both vendors is not the plan price. It is the processing rate, who pays it, and what the software costs if you process elsewhere.
Cova's card also lists cashless ATM debit under Cova Pay. Ask what happens to that rail if its sponsor bank exits, because in March and June 2026 thousands of dispensary cashless ATM terminals were switched off when a processor left the vertical. Our page on what a cannabis merchant account really runs on lists the questions to ask about any bundled payments product.
Cova or Treez for a single-location dispensary
For a single store with two to four registers, Cova is usually the better buy: the price is public, the plan covers what a one-location shop uses, and kiosk and built-in ecommerce sit on the same card. Treez's strengths, unlimited lanes, enterprise analytics and one contract across stores, are the ones a small shop pays for and does not use.
Reviews and competitor write-ups consistently describe Treez as heavy to configure for a small store, and one third-party roundup calls it too much, and too expensive, for single-store operators. That is a fit judgment, not a quality one. If you run one shop and your volume is ordinary, our list of the best cannabis POS for a single location sets Cova against the other vendors that publish a price.
Cova or Treez for a high-volume or multi-location dispensary
For a high-volume store running five or more lanes, or a chain that wants one contract, Treez is the stronger candidate, because its price does not rise when you add a register and Cova moves you to a custom Enterprise quote at that size. California, Treez's home market, is where this matchup is most often decided, and Treez said it processed 15% of that state's cannabis sales by 2018.
The cost that hurts a chain is rarely the subscription. It is migrating every store's history and state reporting at once, and binding every location to one vendor's payments. Price the second and third store explicitly on both quotes, and see our guide to the best POS for a multi-location dispensary for what to compare beyond price.
Does Cova or Treez work with Metrc?
Both do. Cova lists state-approved Metrc and BioTrack integrations on every US plan. Treez documents a bidirectional Metrc integration and BioTrack support for Illinois and New York. Neither claim tells you how a failed sync is handled on a Saturday night, which is the question that matters in practice.
Ask each vendor for two references running your license type in your state, and ask them specifically about the last time their state reporting failed and how long the fix took. If you are still choosing between tracking systems themselves, our comparison of seed to sale software by price covers which platforms report to which state systems.
Should I switch from Cova to Treez, or from Treez to Cova?
Switch only if the written quote from the other vendor beats your renewal on total cost at your real register count, payments included, and supports your state's tracking system on your license type. Plan on four to eight weeks from signature to the first sale on the new system, and most of that time goes into data and state reporting.
A store that has shrunk from six lanes to three is the classic case for moving from Treez to Cova: the unlimited plan is now buying capacity the store does not use, and a published Powerhouse price is easy to check. A store that has grown past four lanes, or opened a second location, is the case for the opposite move. Either way, collect both offers in the same format, with software, payments, ecommerce, hardware and onboarding on separate lines, and compare them line by line; a proper tool for comparing vendor quotes line by line keeps a multi-year software decision from turning on whichever headline number was quoted last. The order of work is in our guide to switching dispensary POS systems.
What to get in writing from Cova and Treez
- The monthly software price at your real register count, and what one more register costs on each.
- The processing rate on Cova Pay and TreezPay, who pays it, and the software price if you keep your current processor.
- Ecommerce as its own line on the Treez quote, so it can be set against Cova's $199, or $149 on promotion.
- Setup, onboarding, data migration and hardware, each priced separately.
- Term length, the auto-renewal date, the notice window and any cap on the renewal increase.
- Your right to export customers, sales history and inventory, in what format and on what notice.
If neither offer holds up, our Cova alternatives roundup prices IndicaOnline, GrowFlow and others on their own cards, and our Treez vs Dutchie comparison covers the other common Treez matchup. The wider dispensary POS systems comparison includes the rest of the market.
Whichever register you pick, it only records the sale. Adults choosing a shop compare menus, prices and hours before they leave home, and a claimed dispensary listing puts your licensed store in front of them.
