Best Cannabis Security Companies: Guard and Monitoring Costs

The short answer

The best cannabis security company for a dispensary depends on which of three jobs you are hiring for: on-site guards, system installation and monitoring, or cash transport. Very few firms do all three well, and almost none publish a price. The one number worth knowing before any call is the guard rate. At the Bureau of Labor Statistics May 2025 median wage of $20.79 an hour for a California security guard, and the 50 to 60 percent markup guard firms typically bill over pay, a contract officer costs about $31 to $33 an hour. In California and Illinois a guard is required every hour you are open, so that one line can run past $130,000 a year and outweigh every camera in the building.

Do dispensaries need security guards?

In California and Illinois, yes, by rule. California requires every storefront retailer to hire or contract security personnel who are at least 21 and licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, on site during all hours of operation (4 CCR 15045). Delivery-only retailers are exempt. The City of Los Angeles repeats the requirement in its own cannabis rules. Illinois requires guards to be present at all times a dispensary is open, and a June 2026 law now lets dispensaries hire their own guards instead of contracting a third-party firm.

Elsewhere the state rule is usually silent. We read the security chapters for Massachusetts (935 CMR 500.110), Michigan (R 420.209), Colorado (Rule 3-220), New Jersey and Nevada and found no statewide guard mandate. That does not mean you will not need one. Local permits, host community agreements and your insurer can all require a guard where the state does not, so check your city approval and your policy before you assume the line is optional.

How much does a dispensary security guard cost?

Roughly $28 to $35 an hour for an unarmed contract guard in most licensed markets, and more for armed. There is almost no published price, so we built the number from two public sources: the BLS median wage for security guards in each state, and the markup that guard firms bill over pay. An industry study of about two million shifts across more than 200 security firms found bill rates run 50 to 60 percent above pay, with officer wages making up 67 to 75 percent of the bill.

The annual column is our arithmetic: 12 open hours a day for 365 days is 4,380 guard hours. Change the hours and the figure moves in a straight line, so a store open 14 hours a day adds about a sixth. These are unarmed rates built from median pay. Federal contract data gives a sense of the ceiling: across General Services Administration schedule rates for guard services, the median ceiling is about $52 an hour unarmed and $68 armed. Those are federal maximums, not dispensary quotes, but they show why an armed officer can cost close to double.

One California firm, Guardian Integrated Security, publishes $25 to $30 an hour per licensed guard. That sits below the implied rate from the state's median wage, which is worth asking about directly: either the quote excludes something (overtime, holidays, a supervisor, a minimum shift) or the guard is paid well under the state median, and turnover in a guard post is its own security risk.

The best cannabis security companies, by what they actually sell

We opened each company's own site rather than relying on a directory, confirmed each is operating in 2026, and sorted them by the job they do. Several names that still appear on older "best of" lists have been sold or discontinued, and we note those below the table.

Two corrections to older lists. Iron Protection Group, long cited as a cannabis guard leader, was acquired by General Cannabis in 2015, and the parent disclosed transferring its Colorado guard contracts and cancelling its California ones in early 2020. Helix TCS sold its guarding business in 2020, and the remaining company is not a security vendor today. If either name turns up on a shortlist, confirm who you are actually signing with.

Blue Line is also the only company here with audited public numbers. Its last annual report, for 2024, showed revenue of about $4.37 million, split roughly evenly between transport and currency processing, with net income of about $242,000. It stopped filing with the SEC in August 2025, so there is no newer public data.

Is it cheaper to hire your own security guard?

Often on the hourly line, not always in total. In-house, you pay the wage plus payroll taxes and workers' compensation, which guard firms put at about 15 percent of the bill, and you avoid the firm's margin. You also take on everything the firm was doing for that margin: licensing the guard, training, covering sick days and vacations, scheduling a relief officer, and carrying the liability when something goes wrong on the floor.

Illinois made the choice real in June 2026 by letting dispensaries employ guards directly. If you go that route, the hiring process is the control that matters most, because the guard is the person standing next to the cash and the vault. Running structured first-round screening interviews with the same questions for every candidate makes it much easier to compare applicants fairly and to document why you hired the person you did. California still requires the guard to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services license whether you hire directly or contract, so check that credential before anything else.

What does alarm monitoring cost for a dispensary?

Central station monitoring is one of the cheapest lines in the whole security budget. Published list prices start at $8 to $15 a month and top out around $45: Alarm Grid lists $15, $25, $35 and $45 plans, and GeoArm lists business monitoring from $8 a month and video verification from $20. Those are self-install list prices. A cannabis integrator bundling monitoring with the system it installed will charge more, and none of the ones we checked publish that figure.

Whether a third party has to monitor the alarm at all depends on the state. California requires a licensed alarm company operator, New York a third-party central station and Pennsylvania professional monitoring. What does cash pickup cost for a dispensary?

Nobody publishes it. Every cannabis cash-in-transit vendor we checked, Blue Line and Operational Security Solutions included, quotes per route. The closest public terms we found come from a national armored carrier's purchasing-cooperative contract outside cannabis: a base pickup price negotiated by geography, then published surcharges such as $0.10 per $1,000 of declared value above $150,000 and $1.75 a minute once a stop runs past seven minutes. That structure is the useful part. Ask your quote to separate the base stop fee from the liability charge, because the liability charge grows with your deposits and the base fee does not.

How to choose a cannabis security company

Start from the rule, not the brochure. Find out whether your state or city requires a guard, what footage retention it sets and who must monitor the alarm. Then ask every vendor for the same four numbers in writing: the hourly bill rate with the minimum shift and overtime terms, the monthly monitoring fee, the storage the system is sized for in days per camera, and the price of cash pickup split into base fee and liability. Ask for the firm's state license numbers too. California guard companies hold a Private Patrol Operator license and Illinois guard agencies a state agency license, and both are public and checkable. A firm that will not put its license number on the quote is not one to hand your vault code to.

Security protects the license. It does not fill the store.
