BUDGET YOUR POS SPEND

Proteus 420 pricing and what the dispensary POS costs per month

The short answer

Proteus 420 is a cannabis retail point of sale system that does not publish a rate card. Software directories report a starting price of about $450 a month, and one listing details a package of one location and 15 users at $425 a month plus a $500 one-time setup fee, which makes the first bill $925. Extra locations and users are quote only. Treat all of it as a reported starting point, not a contract price, and ask for a written quote that lists hardware, payment processing, support and what happens to your data if you leave.

Our published directory listing (not a POS)

If you search for what Proteus 420 costs, you will find the same two or three numbers repeated across software directories and almost nothing from the vendor itself. That is normal for cannabis POS. Dutchie, Flowhub, Cova and Treez all route you to a sales call, and the reported ranges online are only as good as whoever submitted them.

This page lays out the figures that are reported for Proteus 420, says plainly which of them come from third parties, shows how a reported monthly price turns into a real first-year cost, and gives you a short list of things to get in writing before you sign. We sell dispensary listings, not point of sale software, so we earn nothing whichever register you pick.

Why it works

What a published $99 listing price gives you

A price you can read before you call anyone

Listed is $99 a month, published in USD, billed monthly. You should be able to budget without booking a demo first. Unlike a POS, our listing is the demand side of your business, not the register.

Your live menu in front of local buyers

Whichever POS runs your registers, shoppers still have to find the shop. A claimed listing puts your menu, hours and daily deals where adults in your area are already searching for a licensed store.

No per-transaction meter on us

Our listing is a flat monthly fee. It does not rise with your sales, your register count or your user count.

Honest about what a POS does that we do not

Proteus 420 and its rivals ring up sales, track inventory and report to the state. We do none of that. We help the right customers find you.

Licensed shops only

We verify the state license before a listing goes live, so shoppers see a store that is allowed to sell.

How it works

Four steps, in the order that actually pays

1

Count your users, not just your registers

The one detailed listing prices a package at 15 users. A shop with budtenders, managers and a back office can pass that, and anything above it is a quote.

2

Add the setup fee and hardware

A reported $500 setup fee turns a $425 month into a $925 first bill. Scanners, receipt printers and a cash drawer are on top unless the quote says otherwise.

3

Ask what payment processing costs

Cannabis card and debit processing is priced separately from the software in most deals. Get the rate in writing next to the subscription.

4

Fund the demand side too

A compliant POS with nobody walking in is an expensive way to count an empty room. Budget for how customers will find you as well.

How much does Proteus 420 cost?

Proteus 420 does not publish pricing, so every number you see is reported by someone else. Software directories list a starting price of about $450 a month for the retail and POS product. One listing breaks a package down as $425 a month for one location and 15 users, with a $500 one-time setup fee, for a first bill of $925. Anything larger is a sales conversation.

Directory prices are usually submitted by the vendor or a reseller at some point and then left alone, so read them as a floor for a small shop. A realistic first-year budget is twelve months of subscription, the setup fee, hardware and the cost of your payment setup, not the monthly figure alone.

What does a Proteus 420 subscription cover?

Directory and marketplace descriptions of the retail package list inventory management, point of sale transactions, customer loyalty programs and state compliance reporting. Those are the standard jobs of a cannabis register, so use them as the baseline when you compare a quote.

What listings do not settle is how much of the rest you pay for: online ordering, delivery, a customer app, texting and integrations with the menu sites your shoppers use. Ask for each one by name and ask whether it is included, an add-on or a separate vendor.

  • Is the Metrc or other state tracking connection included in the base price in your state?
  • Which hardware does the vendor require, and can you use equipment you already own?
  • What is the contract term, and what does it cost to leave early?
  • Can you export your customer and product data in a usable format if you leave?

How does a $450 POS compare with the rest of the market?

On reported numbers, Proteus 420 sits at the low to middle end for a single location. IndicaOnline publishes a rate card starting at $240 a month billed annually, and Dutchie and Flowhub are reported in the $400 to $1,000 range with processing, hardware and ecommerce on top. Lower is not automatically better. A cheap register that lacks the integration your state requires costs you more than the one with the higher sticker.

For the full field, with the same caveats about who published each number, see our comparison of cannabis POS systems and the published tiers on IndicaOnline pricing.

Who is Proteus 420 a fit for?

The reported price and package shape point at independent single-location retailers that want a conventional register without a long bundle of extras. A multi-location operator, or a shop that wants ecommerce, payments and marketing from one vendor, will usually be quoted differently and should compare bundles, not subscriptions.

If you are moving off another system, read our guide to switching dispensary POS systems before you sign, because the migration and the overlap month are real costs.

Does a POS bring in customers?

No. A register records sales. It does not put your shop in front of someone searching for a licensed store nearby. That is what a verified directory listing does, at a flat monthly fee that does not move with your sales. Many owners budget the register and forget the demand side, then wonder why the new system is quiet. If you want to see how that part works, read about listing your dispensary.
