The short answer

The best CBD POS system for most hemp and CBD stores is an ordinary retail POS that lets you choose your own payment processor, not a cannabis dispensary POS. Of the systems that publish a price, KORONA POS is the strongest fit: $59, $79 or $99 a month per terminal, month to month, and processing agnostic, so losing a merchant account does not mean losing the register. Square for Retail is the cheapest route if Square approves you for its CBD program, but the software and the processor are one company. Lightspeed Retail publishes $89, $149 and $289 a month with one register included. Cannabis systems such as Cova and IndicaOnline cost $240 to $599 a month and sell a state tracking integration a hemp store cannot use.

The reason processor choice outranks features is simple. CBD stores rarely lose their software. They lose their merchant account, and the register turns into a cash drawer overnight. Every recommendation below follows from that.

A CBD counter needs lot tracking, an age prompt and a processor you can swap. It does not need Metrc.

What is the best POS system for a CBD store?

We read each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026. Where a vendor publishes nothing, the table says so rather than repeating a directory estimate.

FTx POS, Vibe Retail and Brilliant POS also market to CBD stores. None of the three published a rate card we could read, so a quote is the only comparison available.

What does a CBD POS system cost for a store with three registers?

Per-terminal and per-location pricing look similar on a single register and come apart quickly at three. Here is one store with three checkout stations, priced on the published monthly cards.

SystemPlanSoftware per monthWhat is not in that number
Square for RetailPlus, one locationAbout $49 (reported)Hardware, and processing at Square's rate on every sale
KORONA POSCore on 3 terminals$177Hardware and your processor's rate. $237 on Retail, $297 on Plus
Lightspeed RetailBasic plus 2 extra registers$89 plus two add-on registersAdd-on register price is not shown on the card; ask
IndicaOnlineCore plus 1 extra register$290 annual, $350 monthlyA Metrc integration a hemp store will never switch on
CovaPowerhouse (Boutique stops at 2)$499 to $599Same, plus eCommerce at $199

The software line is the small number. A CBD merchant account is underwritten as elevated risk, and the processing rate, the rolling reserve and the funding delay on it will usually cost more each month than any plan above. That is why the question to answer first is where your cards will run, and why a processor-agnostic register is worth a few dollars more.

Is Square good for a CBD store?

Square is good for a small CBD store that has been approved for Square's CBD program, and risky for one that has not. The program accepts hemp and hemp-derived CBD testing under 0.3% THC, excludes marijuana-derived products and health claims, and runs through its own application, so a standard Square retail account is not a CBD account. Hemp flower is reported to need lab certification of THC level and ingredients.

The trade-off is lock-in. On Square, the register, the catalog and the processor are one relationship. If Square changes its CBD policy after the federal hemp definition changes, the store loses payments and software at once. A store doing meaningful volume should keep a clean data export and know which processor-agnostic system it would move to.

Do you need a cannabis POS to sell CBD?

No, not for federally compliant hemp CBD. Cannabis POS software is priced around a live connection to a state seed-to-sale system such as Metrc, and that obligation comes with a state cannabis license. A hemp retailer has no state inventory account to connect. The exception is intoxicating hemp in states that have moved it into the licensed channel, such as Nevada and Rhode Island, where the tracking requirement follows the product. We map which product types need what on our CBD POS system page, and the longer version of the argument is in do you need a cannabis POS system.

What features should a CBD POS system have?

A CBD POS system needs five things, and none of them is state reporting.

  • Lot or batch tracking tied to a certificate of analysis, so a recall or a state inquiry is answered with a transaction list.
  • An age prompt logged against the sale, because a growing number of states set a purchase age for hemp cannabinoid products.
  • Category reporting that keeps non-intoxicating and intoxicating lines apart, which is exactly the line the federal change draws.
  • One catalog across the counter and the web store, since online CBD sales often run on a different processor.
  • A full export you can run yourself, so changing systems after a processor shutdown is a weekend, not a rebuild.

Hardware is the ordinary retail kind: a tablet or terminal, a scanner, a receipt printer and a cash drawer. Our POS hardware cost breakdown prices each piece and notes which ones a hemp counter can skip.

What happens to CBD stores on December 11, 2026?

On December 11, 2026 the narrower federal hemp definition takes effect for naturally occurring cannabinoids, including CBD, THCA and hemp delta-9. It measures total THC, counts THCA, and caps finished products at 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container. The original date was November 12, 2026, but H.R. 6500, a stopgap funding bill signed on September 2, 2026, moved most of the change back 30 days. Synthesized cannabinoids that the plant cannot produce naturally keep the November 12 date. Reporting on the bill says the White House does not intend to support another extension.

For a POS purchase that means two practical things. Keep the contract short, because a three-year term signed now runs straight through the change and whatever states do next. And make sure your system can report sales by category, because some of your shelf may not be sellable in December and you will want to know exactly what it earned in October.

Which CBD payment processor should you pair with the POS?

Pick the processor before the software, get a written approval that names your actual product list, and ask what happens to settled funds if the policy changes mid-contract. We compare Square, the large online card processors, Shopify Payments and specialist high-risk acquirers in CBD merchant account options. Once an account is open, the ratio that most often ends it is disputes, so keeping chargebacks under your acquirer's threshold is worth treating as part of the payments setup rather than a later problem.

Which CBD POS should you choose?

  • One small store, Square-approved, mostly topicals: Square for Retail, with an export routine and a fallback plan.
  • Any store that has been shut off before, or sells tinctures and gummies at volume: KORONA POS on a processor that has approved your catalog in writing.
  • Large catalog with a real web store: Lightspeed Retail, after confirming its payments arm will underwrite CBD, or with a separate processor.
  • Selling delta-8 or hemp THC drinks in a state that tracks them: a cannabis-native system such as Flowhub, priced on a cannabis POS pricing basis.
  • Holding a state cannabis license as well: a dispensary POS, plus a claimed, license-verified listing on Dispensaries at $99 a month so buyers nearby can find the shop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest POS system for a CBD store?

Square for Retail's free tier is the cheapest software, but only if Square approves you for its CBD program, and processing still applies on every sale. Among processor-agnostic systems, KORONA POS Core at $59 a month per terminal is the lowest published price we found in October 2026.

Can I use Shopify POS for a CBD store?

Shopify allows CBD on the platform, but Shopify Payments in the US defers to the card processors behind it, and those treat CBD as a restricted business rather than a prohibited one. Approval is case by case, so get written confirmation for your catalog before you build on it.

Does a CBD store need Metrc?

No, not for federally compliant hemp. Metrc tracks state-licensed cannabis and the requirement attaches to the cannabis license. Intoxicating hemp in states that have pulled it into the licensed channel is the exception.

Is a cannabis POS better for a CBD store?

Usually not. A cannabis POS costs $240 to $599 a month on published cards and most of that price is the state tracking integration, which a hemp store cannot enable. A general retail POS with lot tracking and an age prompt covers what a CBD store actually needs for less.
